Pastor’s Corner.003 One Day at a Time

“But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭6:27-31‬ ‭NRSV‬‬

Somedays my feet hit the floor and I can just feel it, “today‘s gonna be hard”. A poor nights sleep, waking up on the wrong side of the bed, having an unsettling dinner, who on earth knows why; but we all have these days, they happen. You feel sour, you anger easily, grey seems like the color for the day. We may have bad feelings about ourselves or about others, so many things could be happening.

Whenever I have a day like this I try to do a few things.

  1. Catch it early. Am I being short with people? Am I agitated easily? Why am I acting like this? Asking these things takes being aware of yourself, what you are bringing into a situation? Starting your day with a centering activity helps a lot with this process. Prayer, scripture, singing hymns or praise songs, sitting in silence or having a cup of good tea/coffee; really anything that helps YOU be aware of you. I like to sing hymns to become aware of myself and God. It helps me shift my focus from whatever I’m feeling to a God who is bigger than my worst day and brighter than my best. Rest for a moment you just did something amazing, you choose let this feeling/energy stop with you.

  2. Now that we are more calm and more objective; lets make a positive change. Today I will__________. Make your priorities. What will give you life today? How will you give life to others? Reset your attitude: For the hate I receive I will give love, for the fear I encounter I will respond with hope, for the busyness of today I will hold my share, or whatever is my best for today.

  3. And finally care for yourself. Making this change for today takes a lot. You just brought a little more love into this world. After God did that for 6 days in a row, God in great wisdom took a break. Now I’m not sure what God does for some personal time, but a hot shower or a nice cold/hot drink help me feel better. Maybe you can go to your favorite spot for lunch today?Perhaps you can take time to talk with a good friend today? Take a walk around town, smell a flower in the garden. Maybe the car ride this morning will turn into a karaoke hour?! Go nuts! Enjoy being enjoyed by God.

And hey if you can’t make these steps today that’s ok too, grace and love is still given to you. God,Jesus, the Holy Spirit loves us through everything, even our crummy days. We are the beloved children of God, named as great not just good. one day at a time folks, one day at a time…
